Wearing the Cape: The Beginning, by Marion G. Harmon

"I was driving east on the Eisenhower Expressway when the Teatime Anarchist dropped the Ashland Avenue overpass on top of me, using enough C4 to bring the whole southbound span down at once."
-------------------------------------------

Who wants to be a superhero?

Hope did, but she grew out of it. Which made her superhuman breakthrough in the Ashland Bombing, just before starting her freshman year at the University of Chicago, more than a little ironic.

And now she has some decisions to make. Given the code-name "Astra" and invited to join the Sentinels, Chicago’s premier super-team, will she take up the cape and mask and become a career superhero? Or will she get a handle on her new powers (super-strength has some serious drawbacks) and then get on with her life-plan?

In a world where superheroes join unions and have agents, and the strongest and most photogenic ones become literal supercelebrities, the temptation to become a cape is strong. But the price can be high—especially if you’re “outed” and lose the shield of your secret identity.

Becoming a sidekick puts the decision off for awhile, but Hope’s life is further complicated when The Teatime Anarchist, the supervillain responsible for the Ashland Bombing, takes an interest in her. Apparently as Astra, Hope is supposed to save the world. Or at least a significant part of it.

REVIEWS

"If you love comic-book superheroes, you'll love this.
"If you hate comic-book superheroes you'll still love this!
"The author takes a tired genre graphic-novel superhero concept and transforms it into a very readable, thought-provoking and thoroughly enjoyable book that I cannot recommend highly enough."

John Caterham

"Superhero fiction is so full of tropes that it's nearly impossible to write something new. Wearing The Cape manages that heroic feat, being both a classic superhero story and a new take on the genre all at the same time."

A Superhero Origin Story
By R. Hudson
"Like many people I read comics when I was young but I didn't keep reading them when they "grew up". While I will watch most movies made on comics just to see how they slaughtered it "this time" I have never been interested in reading prose on the subject and I read A LOT of prose of all kinds. Then I was given a copy of this book on the condition that I review it and give my honest opinion. (Free book and all I have to do is read it?) So I did... and I loved it.

I loved reading a book that treated "heroes" as people too. I loved reading a book where the main character doesn't have all the answers, isn't perfect, but is doing their best and making responsible decisions. I loved seeing how Hope grows and changes from her challenges and trials. How others impact her life and how she affects them in turn."

The above is the first part of my review for the book Wearing the Cape of which this is the first 13 chapters. I rated it a 5 because by the end of the book I had cried more then once and I like a book that can make me care that much. If you aren't sure that you want to purchase the full book by all means give this 'Beginning' a try. If you like it as much as I do then you know there is more to read. Not only the full Wearing the Cape but it's sequel Villains Inc. (Wearing the Cape) and the spin off novel Bite Me: Big Easy Nights.

Surprised by this one
By Kindle Customer
To be honest, while looking for some escapist fiction I came across this e-book and found myself loving it. Although I'm quite tired of teenage girls as uber heroines"Wearing the Cape" turned out quite delightful, to the extent I wound up buying two others in the series and am looking forward to the next installment. Astra is a character who grows rapidly on you. I was really surprised that I enjoyed this book so much, although I have to confess to being a former City of Heroes player looking for some good superhero genre fiction that would fill the void. It's a perfect summer read.

Great start of a series (I hope)
By MGrantNH
I really enjoyed this book. It's modern America, but there has been an unexplained "event" that has caused various superhero powers to manifest in ordinary people; many use them for good, but there are also villains. Our heroine is a mature teenager when the trauma of a terrorist act causes her powers to "wake up." And suddenly she's hanging with and being trained by the Chicago band-of-good-guys. And there is love and growth and courage and loss. I loved the premise and the way it was carried out, and I'm looking forward to a couple of more books in the same vein.
