This volume had it's inception in a series of eight lectures delivered at Columbia University during the spring of 1905, and represents, in a much condensed form, the results of a decade of uninterrupted study of the Formicidae, and of the works that have been written on these insects.

Fascinating world of ants

Although 90 years have passed since first publication, Wheeler's "Ants Their Structure, Development and Behavior" remains a classic of ant enthusiasts and ecologists. Although much of the taxonomy has changed and continues to change, the book is still a valuable reference for identification and description of many of the world's ants. What I enjoyed most are chapters XVII -XXVII that deal with many of the fascinating ant relationships with other organisms (tending aphids, protecting plants, slave-making ants...). Another asset of Wheeler's book are the numerous wonderful illustrations accompanying each section. Although a bit technical for a general audience, "Ants" should remain a stimulating excursion into a fascinating group of insects.

A must read book for ant workers

I can not recommend any general text about ants as a substitute for Wheeler's 1910 classic "Ants - Their structure, development and behavior." True, there are Wilson's "Social Insects" and Hölldobler and Wilson's "Ants," but Wheeler is still the classic in English. The original 1910 volume was reprinted in 1926 and 1960. Luckily for us, The Biodiversity Heritage Library has permission from Columbia University Press to distribute a free electronic copy on the internet. Other mrymecological works, in fact most, by Wheeler are available from antbase. Get yourself a hand lens and a pair of forceps. Ants are where it's at.
