From Publishers Weekly
Brown's 25th book is the inaugural installment in the Drifters and Dreamers series, a warm-hearted historical romance set in 1917 Healdton, Okla. Boarding-house owner Clara Anderson, jilted by a preacher 10 years ago, has been waiting for her long lost beau to return-with a derringer in her purse. Her hatred of preachers is only matched by her hatred of oilmen, whom she thinks are ruining the area's simple way of life. So clearly there's no way she would ever risk losing her heart to Briar Nelson, head of the Rose Oil Company. He's nursing his own misfortunes in love, but once Clara's cook, Dulcie, rents one of the boarding-house's rooms to him, neither Briar nor Clara can long deny the attraction. This is a fresh-baked muffin of a novel: not too ambitious, but wholesome, direct and charming without being cloying.

From Booklist
Jilted a decade ago, Clara Anderson buried her broken heart and bruised pride under a cloak of rigid adherence to routine and vehement opposition to change. But oil has been discovered under the cotton fields and cow pastures of sleepy little Healdton, Oklahoma, and when lanky, soft-spoken roustabout Briar Nelson rents a room in Clara's boardinghouse, the Morning Glory, both experience an unwilling mutual attraction. Continued proximity results in Clara's gradual progression from adolescent denial to a more mature attitude of acceptance with a concomitant sweetening of her disposition. Brown's new Drifters & Dreamers series, set in 1917, introduces three cousins, the moonshine industry, and a new canvas for her folksy explorations of life and love at pivotal times in America. Whoa...what a great read!
By CINDY F.
I just love the way Carolyn Brown writes a book. You can always count on her to bring laughter, heated confrontations, along with love and joy into each and every one of her stories. And this one is no exception.

Clara Anderson was jilted a decade ago, but she got over it awhile ago. Now she has has her routine, and she likes it that way. But oil has brought change to Healdton, Oklahoma, and she doesn't like it one bit. That doesn't mean she has to rent rooms to anyone from that oil company, they can all just go looking somewhere else for all she cares. Then one day she comes back from running errands, only to find out that her hired help rented a room to Briar Nelson, a roustabout for Rose Oil.

Briar just wants a place to sleep and eat and if the lovely, crazy woman has a problem with that, she can take it up with a lawyer. He signed the contract for three months and paid the rent in advance and nothing is going to make him leave. Changes more personal than the discovery of oil take place in the Morning Glory Inn as Clara and Briar fight the past and fear the future.

Great read.
By Maya Ruddell
Carolyn Brown does it again. Her dialog and humor are on the money. This story depicts life in a small town when oil was beginning to make history in Texas/Oklahoma. Things were not easy for most people, but they persevered and created a great country. I loved the story and laughed aloud many times. I am a great fan of Ms. Brown. To borrow a modern expression--You Go Girl!!!!
