I have to say that Patricia Grasso has always been one of my favorite authors. I first discovered her romance novels years ago and have scavenged the whole area to find all her books. (I highly recommend the Devereux family series. Definitely five stars on all of them). Grasso has the ability to draw the reader into every book she writes. It feels that you are living during the era and are there with each of the characters when they are interacting. It is truely a great author who can make you laugh at one moment and cry the next. So, when I heard her latest book, To Tempt an Angel, was available, I, of course, ran right out and bought it. And after reading it, I wish I hadn't spent the money.
Either it was bad editing by the publisher or just plain bad writing, To Tempt An Angel was completely out of the usual style that I expect from Grasso. It is boring and predictable. The story is about a heroine, Angelica Douglas, who is obsessed with getting revenge for her fathers ruin. Her father was financially ruin by the noble families and eventually died of alcoholism. Her hero, Robert Campbell, comes to her rescue. Angelica and Robert teamed up to gain back the Douglas family fortune stolen by several prominent families...blah, blah, blah. And that is pretty much it... a "recipe" romance novel.
Patricia Grasso has the ability to take the most basic of story lines and create something extraordinary. So what happened???
Grasso never really develops her characters. The characters have no personal growth. There is no conflict or sexual tension between the characters. For example, in several situations Angelica gets in huge fights with Robert...she slaps him, then in the next paragraph everything is hunky dory. Even when she finds out that Robert slept around with the "evil woman", she is perfectly fine with it. The reader will begin with a paragraph hoping that there will be some new developement, but is left with an open end. There were so many open endings that the book never went anywhere. The question "why?" was never answered. No explanation to why the these "evil families" targeted the Douglas family, and, most importantly, why Angelica and Douglas fell in love. And the humor was nonexistant. If there was any, it consisted of a talking bird (not necessary) and a little girls problem with beans and farting.
In short, a complete disappointment. Sigh. Maybe her next novel will be better. Of course, I have to wait another year, but I think I can handle it. In the meantime, if you're bored, try reading Julie Garwood (no matter how many times you read her books you never get bored), Teresa Medeiros, Penelope Williamson, Mary Gillgannon, Barbara Dawson Smith, or...so many good ones so little time.

Don't waste your time...

I didn't finish this book and maybe I should have given it more of a chance, although from reading the other two reviews, I don't think I missed anything. I couldn't get into it from the beginning. It bored me silly and I made it about 100 pages before I finally gave up hoping it would get better. The very first turnoff for me was the first love scene. "I'll make you quiver for me" did nothing but turn my stomach. The whole scene would have been much better if Robert would have kept his arrogant mouth shut. Everything he said to her was a complete turnoff. The next thing that bothered me was her slapping him all the time. She was definitely slap-happy. And that he constantly took it and did nothing but rub his red cheek was another turnoff. The hauling around the dead corpse was gross too. All I could think of was the stench as Robert flung the man over his shoulder and put him back in his grave. And doing that to make a few bucks, come on! Like I said, I couldn't get past 100 pages although I did read the last few pages of the book and they weren't any better. They were just as ridiculous as the beginning.

Terrible

I am so disappointed. I had just finished reading Highland Belle by Patricia Grasso, and loved it. So I decided to try another of her books, big mistake!!!!!!
I hated this book. I did not like either of the main characters. The supposed hero was a jerk, treating the heroine very shabbily for most of the book. He had also done certain things in his past, that were beyond despicable. SPOILER ALERT!!!!!! And aside from all that he was also a bragger, with his friends about the deflowering of the heroine. Another thing I did not like was that the story (for the most part) is told from the heroine's point of view.
I did like that the heroine was beautiful, but other than that she only exeperated me. Like so many supposedly "feisty" romance heroines, the moment she meets the hero, her lust/love for him over-rules what ever strength of character she has. To me she demonstrated a lack of self esteem and pride when dealing with the hero (a total turn off in my "fantasy" read), especially when she is supposed to be such a strong heroine. By chapter 3 she had given him, her innocence and soon after that she falls madly in love with him. Yes, he wanted to make a mistress out of her, but she did not have to be so accomodating. What's wrong with playing a little hard to get? Because for all intends she was his mistress, at his sexual beck and call. In my opinion, around the hero, she behaved like a slut, without self-respect or any control of her hormones. She should of slapped him once and left him for good, she deserved better.
Another negative for me: I really like it when the hero falls in love first, or at least both main characters fall in love around the same time. But not in this book, the heroine falls in love way before the hero.
And last but not least, I will not be reading her sister's Samatha story, if such a book comes out. Because it would probably follow a particularly annoying formula in romance books: When a hero is caring, the heroine is (a lot of the times), only so-so looking, over-weight, scarred and/or handicapped in some way. I know all those negative attributes I just listed exist in real life, and though common place, even sad, those attributes are not what I am looking for when escaping from real life.
