Wild State, Book 1

Infamy weighs heavy on Delaney Crawford’s broad shoulders, first as a supposed Confederate turncoat, then as a relentless hunter of Cheyenne dog soldiers. Summoned to the small mining community of Red Creek, the exhausted, embittered Del is doing what he does best—ridding the town of its savage scourge—when one of his bullets misses the mark.

Ex-nun Moira Tully has been working with John White Horse for months to integrate a band of peaceful Cheyenne with the local townsfolk. Now he’s hurt, and she’s been caught in the crossfire. There’s only one man to blame for her simmering anger and the inexplicable attraction that tilts her heart on its axis. Del.

When Del is forced to acknowledge the truth that the Cheyenne are no threat, his task just gets more complicated: fighting a wild attraction that catches flame at the most inconvenient times, and figuring out the treacherous motives behind his hiring.

But the most heart-wrenching challenge could be overcoming sordid pasts that won’t stay in the past—pasts that threaten to bury all hope of happily ever after.

Warning: Features a trigger-happy Southern gentleman, an ex-nun gone rogue and consistently thwarted desires that frustrate them both.

Two people with a dark past meet each other and find forgiveness
By Willread
Two people meet under strange circumstances (he accidentally hits her with his shot) and fall in immediate lust. They both have a past weighing them down and they seem to be on the opposite sides of a serious conflict but that immediate lust still turns into love and it`s very beautifully described just how this happens - they both have to accept what happened to them and they have to forgive themselves (though there is nothing to forgive in her case) by having the other person know what they are hiding.

I just love how their secrets are slowly revealed and how they accept those parts of the other person without any kind of doubt. This is a very rare kind of love - the love that comes with 100% acceptance of that the other person has been through and a special care to what this has done to the other person. In that way these two people are a perfect fit.

I found this book because I loved The Corrupt Compte and after I read Wild Burn, I found Edie Harris` Stripped which was just as good. I`m amazed with how Edie Harris manages to write true characters even when they are set in different periods of time. I love her heroines for being so strong and for being able to stand on their own two feet even when love sweeps them away. And I love her heroes for being so very good even when they`re not. They have their hearts in the right place even if they`ve made plenty of wrong choices.

Oh, and did I mention that her books are hot? They`re that too....

Delaney Crawford Inspires a Lot of Heat
By Connie
Moira Tully, convent escapee and erstwhile teacher, meets Delaney Crawford, a former Southern gentleman with an itchy trigger finger and lousy reputation in "Wild Burn" (Book 1 of the Wild State series).

Within an hour of meeting her, Delaney has managed to shoot off a part of Moira`s earlobe. Okay, he had a reason and it was partly her fault. Nothing like getting the reader right into the action.

This was great historical fiction about the American west. It was great to learn about the Cheyenne in this time period. I loved the setting and really enjoyed these two flawed, but highly likable characters. The sparks fly.

Delaney: "No, ma`am. You and your ruler don`t scare me."

"You ever been courted, Moira Tully? She shook her head. "Good. Then you won`t know if I`m doing it wrong."

Near the end of the story, readers are introduced to Marshal Hood. You will DEFINITELY not want to miss this lawman in future stories. Kudos to Edie Harris for writing a great book!

Wonderful (even for history buffs!)
By Sarah Weinberg
As someone who loves to study history, I am naturally a nit-picker when it comes to historical fiction. In Wild Burn, Harris knocks it out of the park. This book is clearly well-researched, but it doesn't feel showy or heavy handed. The details are subtle and authentic, creating an atmosphere that supports the plot line and enhances the development of the relationship with the hero and heroine.

Harris took a risk addressing racial and cultural tensions that were prominent in this era, and handles it beautifully. She found a situation that provided exciting and meaningful stakes for the protagonists.

Beyond the historical aspect, this story is genuinely engaging, making Wild Burn a wonderful read. I am very excited to see more from this series!
